What is a Body Lift?

A body lift procedure can address several areas of the lower body at once, leading to improvements in the patient’s body contours. Excess skin and fatty tissue that have lingered after weight loss are removed using surgical techniques. This procedure is designed to address these issues in areas such as the buttocks, abdomen, and thighs.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for a Body Lift Procedure?

Many patients who have lost a significant amount of weight are interested in this procedure. However, there are certain criteria that they must meet. These may include:

  • Losing approximately 30 - 50% of their peak weight
  • Struggling with drooping skin and fat around the midsection
  • Having maintained a stable, healthy weight for a long period of time

It is typically recommended that patients wait at least 6 months after major weight loss before undergoing a body lift procedure.

Preparing for the Procedure

Before undergoing a body lift, it is essential that patients are mentally and physically prepared for what it will entail.

When preparing for a body lift procedure, patients must prioritize a healthy lifestyle, which involves maintaining a balanced diet, getting exercise regularly, and avoiding smoking and alcohol. Patients who follow Dr. Hyman’s instructions will have the best chance of achieving their aesthetic goals without any issues.

It is important for patients to keep in mind that a body lift is not a weight loss procedure. Patients should already be close to their goal weight before undergoing the treatment, ensuring that there are no major fluctuations in weight afterward.

What does the Procedure Entail?

As a highly customizable procedure, body lift treatments are incredibly variable and will look different for everyone. Some procedures are more complex than others, depending on what areas are being treated. The surgery usually lasts between four and six hours and involves general anesthesia. While the patient is asleep, Dr. Hyman surgically removes excess skin and fat while creating the desired contours. If required, he will also employ liposuction to achieve this result.

Upon being discharged, patients will be fitted with compression garments to prevent excessive swelling and protect the incisions. Pain medication will also be prescribed to ensure that patients feel comfortable throughout their recovery process.

What is the Recovery Process like?

It can be difficult to determine the length of downtime, as every procedure is different and involves different techniques. Generally speaking, patients are instructed to take off at least two weeks from work and avoid all forms of strenuous activity for at least one month. Swelling can last for up to six months, and it may take as long as a year for final results.
