Arm Lift

ARM LIFT (BRACHIOPLASTY)

As we age, the skin underneath the upper arms may become loose and sag. Brachioplasty, or “arm lift,” is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat from the upper arm are removed. When there is minimal skin excess and good elasticity, liposuction is often sufficient to contour the arms. When there is more significant skin laxity, an incision along the inner arm may be required.

Dr. Hyman has written and lectured extensively on the subject of minimal incision brachioplasty referred to as the “MIB” procedure. This arm lift procedure limits the incision and scarring to the axilla (arm pit) only.

Initial Consultation for Arm Lift Procedure

During your initial consultation with Dr. Hyman, he will discuss with you your objectives and expectations from surgery. This will also involve a complete medical history, and an examination of the skin, soft tissue and muscles of the arms. Dr. Hyman will suggest a procedure that suits you best and answer any questions that you might have.

Arm Lift Procedure

Liposuction of the arms is performed through several small incisions. When a full brachioplasty is required, an incision is made on the inner arm which extends from the armpit to the elbow. Excess fat and skin are removed, and the remaining skin is re-draped and tightened to create a more youthful contour of the upper arms. The procedure takes between two and three hours and is performed in the hospital or at an ambulatory surgical center. Some patients are candidates for the MIB procedure (Minimal Incision Brachioplasty), which confines the scarring to the arm pit area only.

Post Arm Lift Surgery

Following surgery a compression garment is worn for three weeks. Most of the sutures placed are dissolvable. You will need 4-5 days off for recovery. Light exercise such as walking is permitted and encouraged immediately after surgery, but heavy exercise including lifting should be deferred until three weeks after surgery.
