Ear Reshaping New York City

Otoplasty (ear reshaping) is performed to place prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. While this operation is usually performed on children between the ages of six and fourteen, adults who are unhappy with the appearance or shape of their ears can also elect to have this procedure performed. Dr. Joshua Hyman is proud to provide otoplasty in New York, New York.

Ear Reshaping Procedure

Several techniques can be used during otoplasty surgery, and the technique selected depends on each patient’s individual anatomy. Typically, an incision is made on the back of the ear to expose the cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted and bent back towards the head, and sutures are used to hold the new shape. In some cases, a piece of cartilage is removed as well. The result is a more natural ear shape and contour.

Otoplasty surgery takes 2 to 3 hours to perform. It is usually done under general anesthesia or sedation in the hospital or in Dr. Joshua Hyman’s private ambulatory surgery facility. Most patients are able to return home that day. Young children are usually kept in the hospital overnight for observation following surgery.

Post-Ear Reshaping Surgery

Following surgery, a bandage is placed around the head and ears. Two days later, the dressing will be removed. At that point, a headband should be worn around the ears at all times for three weeks and at night only for an additional three weeks. Most sutures will not require removal. Many patients are able to return to work or school one week after the surgery. Children who receive ear reshaping surgery must be observed at all times, especially during playtime or recess, to avoid trauma to the ears. All patients should avoid strenuous exercise for three weeks after surgery.
