Liposuction is known by several names: lipoplasty, lipo, lipectomy and liposculpture suction. By any name, liposuction is one of the most popular body contouring procedures performed in the U.S., and is typically done as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. This means that you can leave our facility on the same day as your procedure and recover comfortably in the privacy of your home.
Liposuction can be performed as a stand-alone procedure, or as part of a:
While it is important to understand what liposuction is, it is equally important to understand what it isn’t. Liposuction is not weight loss surgery. It is not a solution to obesity, and cannot address issues such as stretch marks, skin laxity, dimples or cellulite. If you are interested in undergoing this procedure, you should be at a stable, healthy weight.
Liposuction can be a life-altering experience that offers a number beneficial outcomes, such as:
- Balanced, beautiful figure
- A more youthful and fit body shape
- Improved fit in swimsuits and other clothing
- Greater confidence
In addition to the body-sculpting benefits of liposuction, you may find that, like many who undergo the procedure, you are inspired to live an active, healthy lifestyle in an effort to maintain your results. These lifestyle changes can pay significant long-term dividends and help you stay in better shape for years to come.
Liposuction is a remarkably versatile procedure that can effectively treat any area that has subcutaneous fat. The most common areas for liposuction include:
- Love handles (flanks)
- Under the chin
- Much more
Liposuction is a popular treatment for both women and men. In addition to fine-tuning their masculine contours, many men undergo liposuction to treat gynecomastia, a condition in which men suffer from excessive breast tissue.
Our practice offers financing options to assist with the cost of liposuction and other treatments.
Like other plastic surgery procedures, liposuction candidates must be at least 18 years old and have realistic expectations for what the procedure can achieve. Typically, good liposuction candidates:
- Are in good general health
- Maintain a healthy, stable weight
- Are non-smokers or are willing to quit 2 weeks prior to the procedure
- Have realistic expectations for their results
It’s best to consider liposuction as an effective method for putting the finishing touches on your exercise and nutrition efforts. Lipo isn’t a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. If you are considerably overweight, it may be necessary to postpone treatment until you reach a healthy weight goal.
"Dr. Hyman is a superior plastic surgeon. He is a unique combination of demeanor, professionalism and expertise." - David, Healthgrades Review
Tumescent liposuction utilizes tumescent fluid to assist the fat-removal process. Tumescent fluid causes targeted fat cells to become swollen and firm, making it easier to be broken apart and removed through a small tube called a cannula. Tumescent fluid’s special formulation includes:
- Lidocaine: to reduce or eliminate discomfort
- Epinephrine: to minimize bruising and bleeding complications
- Saline: sterile saline solution
The lidocaine in tumescent fluid can remain active in the body for up to 24 hours, combating any discomfort well after your liposuction procedure has been completed. Once the effects of lidocaine have deteriorated, you can easily manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) involves the use of a vibrating cannula to break up unwanted pockets of fat to allow for easier, more complete extraction. Not only does this effective technique help to remove a greater amount of fatty tissue, PAL can provide:
- Shorter recovery period
- Reduced postoperative discomfort
- Less risk of excessive bleeding
- Smaller incisions
- Less damage to surrounding tissue
While every patient responds differently to lipo procedures, the PAL technique tends to reduce both incision and fat-removal trauma. This offers a less risky and more comfortable approach to shaping and toning your figure.
Dr. Hyman is proud to offer SmartLipo™, the most sophisticated liposuction option available today. It involves less trauma and less downtime than traditional liposuction. Unlike other types of liposuction, SmartLipo is usually performed under local anesthesia, while the patient is awake.
SmartLipo utilizes advanced laser technology to safely and effectively reduce the fat contained in fat cells. It also smoothes and tightens the skin to minimize the looseness that can occur with traditional liposuction. This procedure can be performed alone to treat smaller areas of fat, such as below the chin, or in combination with liposuction to remove larger areas of fat, including those in the abdomen, flanks and thighs.
Micro liposuction, or micro lipo, is a very precise liposuction technique, designed to remove fat from smaller, more delicate areas of the body. The process utilizes very small incisions and a specially-designed micro cannula. The process creates refined contours while minimizing scarring, swelling and recovery time.
Micro lipo is performed comfortably while you are awake. It is often used on the flanks and abdomen, and can also be performed on areas that are typically more difficult to treat, such as the ankles, knees, elbows and neck.
One of the most exciting aspects of liposuction is the ability to put the fat that has been removed to good use. With fat grafting or fat transfer, Dr. Hyman can reuse the fat extracted from unwanted areas to improve the contours of other parts of your figure. During this process, your removed fat is purified before being injected into a new area of your body. Injecting the fat in the buttock area can create a more rounded rejuvenated buttock and is commonly referred to as a Bazilian Buttock Lift.
Fat transfer can be used with breast implants to achieve fuller, rounder breasts in breast augmentation procedures. Fat can thicken the tissue around an implant creating a more natural breast implant result when indicated.
Dr. Hyman is dedicated to providing you with a fully-customized treatment plan that is designed specifically for your unique skin type, age and goals. Our mission is to deliver an unparalleled patient experience, using advanced technology, proven techniques and compassionate patient-focused care.
Dr. Hyman is passionate about helping you achieve your aesthetic goals in a friendly and supportive environment. He will guide you through every step of your process with professionalism and integrity. The type of liposuction procedure that is best for you depends on a number of factors, such as the amount of fat you would like to remove and the laxity of your skin. Dr. Hyman will work closely with you to clearly understand your objectives and thoroughly explain all of your treatment options.
Your liposuction procedure begins with a comprehensive consultation at our Manhattan office. During this important one-on-one meeting with Dr. Hyman, he will assess your medical history and physical condition. He will answer your questions, address your concerns and determine your lipo candidacy. The decision is ultimately yours; Dr. Hyman will help you make an informed one.
It’s important to understand that every patient is unique and can heal somewhat differently. While some patients choose to take three to five days off from work to recuperate, others can go back to work in as little as 24 hours, depending on the type of procedure that was performed and the physical demands of their jobs. Rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous activity during your initial recovery. Dr. Hyman will discuss your particular set of circumstances and advise when it’s best to resume your regular activities.
The treatment area may be numb or uncomfortable for the first few days after surgery. You may also experience some swelling or bruising; these symptoms are completely normal and will subside. Dr. Hyman will discuss your pain management options with you to ensure your recovery is comfortable.
You may notice some results from your procedure right away, however, the final outcome of your liposuction may not be fully apparent for a few months after surgery.
Incisions are not made during liposuction surgery. Dr. Hyman makes small 2mm punctures deep to the skin with a specialized instrument which will not lead to scarring. However, as a double board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive liposuction experience, Dr. Hyman understands how to minimize the appearance of your cosmetic body contouring procedure and provide final results that are elegant and natural-looking. In addition to his meticulous technique and artful eye, Dr. Hyman will provide you with detailed pre and postoperative instructions to ensure that your recovery is as discreet as possible.
