Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) New York City
Gynecomastia is defined as enlarged or excess male breast tissue and fat, and may affect one or both breasts. While various medications have been associated with this gynecomastia, in most cases the cause of this condition is not known. Men who feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts can receive breast reduction surgery that will remove excess glandular tissue and, if necessary, excess skin from the breasts. The result is an improved contour and a flatter, firmer chest.
Initial Consultation for Male Breast Reduction Procedure
During your initial consultation with Dr. Hyman, you will discuss your expectations and desires of the surgery. This visit will include a review of your complete medical history and an examination of the breasts. If Dr. Hyman suspects that a medical problem is the cause of the gynecomastia, you will be referred to an appropriate specialist. Dr. Hyman will then answer any questions that you might have and suggest a procedure that will suit you best.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
The type of breast reduction procedure performed depends upon the patient’s individual anatomy. Surgery may be performed with only liposuction, only glandular excision, or (most likely) a combination of these techniques. In some cases, excess skin may also need to be removed from the breasts. The male breast reduction procedure takes two hours and is performed under general anesthesia either in the hospital or Dr. Hyman’s private ambulatory surgery facility. After the surgery, you may safely return home.
Post Breast Augmentation Surgery
Following surgery, a compression garment is placed on the breasts and worn continuously for three weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within several days. Walking and light activity is permitted the day following the surgery, but strenuous activity should be avoided for at least three weeks.
