After experiencing major weight loss, excess skin and fat can distort the appearance of the abdomen. The abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, procedure can give our patients a flatter, firmer abdomen by removing the excess fat and skin and tightening the abdominal muscles. Dr. Joshua Hyman is proud to provide the abdominoplasty in New York, New York.
After creating a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen, the rectus abdominis muscles of the abdomen are tightened and the excess skin and fat are trimmed and re-draped. Most abdominoplasty treatments will require repositioning of the umbilicus (the navel). In a “mini” abdominoplasty procedure, the tightening of the lower abdominal muscle tightening, along with the removal of excess skin and fat, are performed through a small horizontal incision without repositioning the navel. In both procedures, small drain tubes will be placed. The procedure averages two hours in length and is performed either in the hospital or in Dr. Joshua Hyman’s private ambulatory surgery facility under general anesthesia. Most patients are able to return home the evening of their procedure.
After surgery, a soft abdominal binder is placed. Most surgical sutures will dissolve, and your drains will be removed 1-2 weeks after your surgery. Patients generally require one week off from work after an abdominoplasty. Walking is permitted and encouraged immediately after surgery, but strenuous activity and heavy lifting should not be performed until six weeks following the surgery.
