BODY LIFT (BELT LIPECTOMY – CIRCUMFERENTIAL TUMMY TUCK)
Following significant weight loss, some patients have excessive amounts of hanging skin in their abdomen, inner thighs, arms, chests, buttocks, and face. In the abdomen, the hanging skin can lead to rashes and infections between skin folds. To remove the excessive soft tissue from the abdomen and back and lift the lateral thighs and buttocks, Dr. Joshua Hyman will perform a body lift, or belt lipectomy in New York, New York. The result is a smooth body contour and more natural appearance. In order to be a candidate for this procedure, patients must have attained a stable body weight. Additional procedures to correct the sagging skin of the inner thighs, chest area, arms, and face are performed separately, allowing at least three months between each operation.
Body Lift Procedure
The belt lipectomy is performed by making horizontal incisions in the lower abdomen and in the lower back just above the buttocks. The rectus abdominis muscles of the abdomen are simultaneously tightened, and the excess skin and fat from the abdomen, flanks, and back are trimmed and re-draped. Liposuction can also be used at this point to help reduce the flanks. The umbilicus, or navel, is then repositioned. Small drains are placed beneath both the anterior and posterior skin. The procedure averages six hours in length and is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. All patients who receive a body lift will stay in the hospital for 1-3 days after the surgery is performed.
Post-Lower Body Lift Surgery
Following surgery, an abdominal binder is placed. The drains are removed 1-2 weeks after the surgery. Once the drains have been removed, a compressive garment will then be placed. Patients generally require two weeks off of work after a body lift. Walking is permitted and encouraged the day after surgery, but strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be limited until six weeks following surgery.
