Before & After

To reshape your body by reducing excess fat from different areas, including the hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, upper arms, and neck Dr. Joshua Hyman may recommend liposuction in New York, New York. Liposuction can address areas that do not respond well to weight loss or exercise, but it is not a weight-reduction surgery. The best candidates for liposuction are patients with good skin tone (elasticity) and who have areas of excess fat in localized regions. Liposuction may be performed on several areas of the body at the same time and can be combined with other procedures.

Initial Consultation for Liposuction Procedure

During your initial consultation with Dr. Joshua Hyman, you will go over your objectives and expectations of the liposuction procedure. After reviewing your complete medical history and examining the areas in question, our plastic surgeon will suggest the procedure that will suit you best. At this point, he will also answer any questions you may have about liposuction or plastic surgery in general.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is performed using the tumescent technique, which involves injecting a fluid containing a saline solution, lidocaine, and epinephrine just beneath the skin prior to the removal of fat. This method allows fat to be removed more easily, reduces blood loss, and provides anesthesia both during and after surgery. The scars from the liposuction incision are small (less than 1 cm) and are placed in inconspicuous locations. Through these incisions, a narrow tube (cannula) is inserted and used to vacuum the layer of fat deep beneath the skin.

The liposuction procedure typically takes between 1 and 3 hours to perform, depending upon the number and size of the areas to be treated. The surgery is usually performed in Dr. Joshua Hyman’s private ambulatory surgery facility, but when large volumes of fat are removed, an overnight observational stay in the hospital may be required. Local anesthesia alone may be sufficient for liposuction of small areas, but most patients are more comfortable with a combination of local anesthesia and sedation provided by an anesthesiologist.

Post-Liposuction Surgery

Following your procedure, you may experience some fluid drainage, lasting 1-2 days, from your incisions. A compression garment will be placed immediately after the procedure and must be worn at all times for two weeks and then at night for the following four weeks. Our office will order the appropriate size compression garment(s) prior to your surgery. Purchasing two garments will allow you to wear one while washing the other. You will be encouraged to walk the day following surgery, but heavy exercise should be avoided for three weeks. Most patients have moderate bruising which disappears within 3-4 weeks. You should stay home from work for 3-4 days after the surgery, depending on the amount of liposuction that was performed.
