What concerns can rhinoplasty treat?

Rhinoplasty can address cosmetic and functional issues affecting the nose. You may choose to have nose surgery for cosmetic or functional issues -- or both.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty can reshape your nose by:

  • Increasing size
  • Decreasing size
  • Reshaping the nasal tip when too small, too large, too droopy, or too wide
  • Reshaping a crooked or bent nose
  • Reducing nostril span
  • Increasing nostril span
  • Creating a different angle between the upper lip and the nose
  • Resolving asymmetry
  • Repairing a broken nose

Functional rhinoplasty

Difficulty breathing, sleep apnea, or chronic snoring are often the result of structural defects within the nose. You may have been born with narrow or crooked nasal passages, you may have suffered an injury to your nose, or age may have impacted the inner nasal structures. In many cases, these conditions can be resolved with nose surgery. Functional rhinoplasty may involve:

  • Increasing the width of your nasal passages
  • Reshaping or repositioning cartilage
  • Correcting a deviated septum

Am I a candidate for rhinoplasty?

If you are dissatisfied with your nose and meet a few basic health and lifestyle qualifications, you are likely a good candidate for Dr. Hyman’s specialized procedure. In general, the criteria include:

  • Your nose is fully developed – Cosmetic concerns with your nose can resolve themselves as your nose naturally develops. The nose is usually fully matured around age 14 for girls and age 16 for boys.
  • You are in good general health – You do not have health conditions that may impede the healing process.
  • You are a non-smoker or committed to abstaining as required – Smoking can interfere with your ability to heal from the surgery, and you would need to quit smoking before surgery and for the entirety of your recovery.

What can I expect from the procedure?

Dr. Hyman has developed a special recovery protocol that minimizes swelling and allows his patients to enjoy the results of nose surgery faster. When needed, he performs Kenalog injections (to reduce inflammation and swelling) for up to a year – at no added cost.

Types of incisions

Your rhinoplasty procedure is customized specifically to address your unique aesthetic and functional issues. Based on your requirements, Dr. Hyman may perform either open or closed rhinoplasty.

  • Open rhinoplasty – One incision is made externally across the columella at the base of the nose. This approach rarely leaves a visible scar after healing.
  • Closed rhinoplasty – Incisions are placed within the nostrils.

Once the incision is made, Dr. Hyman will reshape the inner framework (bone and cartilage) of your nose, after which the skin and tissue are repositioned and the incisions closed. Once the surgery is complete, a splint is placed to support and protect the area as well as decrease swelling. Rhinoplasty surgery takes about two-three hours, and you will be able to go home the same day. Plan to have a friend or loved one drive you home after the procedure.

What is the recovery time?

The splint will be removed from the outside of the nose as well as any sutures five-seven days after the procedure. Dr. Hyman recommends taping your newly shaped nose when sleeping for another two weeks to decrease swelling. You can expect to return to work or school seven to ten days after the procedure. You will be thrilled with the immediate transformation. Dr. Hyman will take “after” photos before you awaken from anesthesia to share the beauty of the surgical results. Dr. Hyman is known for achieving results that look very natural, not over-projected or scooped out, but balanced with your natural features.

The roadmap to recovery

During the first week after surgery, it is common to experience some bruising and swelling around the eyes. You can apply cold compresses per Dr. Hyman’s instructions to help reduce these symptoms. Vigorous physical activities must be avoided for at least one week. Most patients can return to work after one week unless their work duties are physically demanding. The swelling gradually decreases as the bones heal. It takes about six weeks for the bones to heal completely, and you must protect your nose from any impact or force. The scar tissue will soften over the next several months. The final results are achieved in about 12 months once all residual swelling has vanished.

Your private, detailed consultation

Dr. Hyman’s integrity demands that he will carefully vet each patient to ensure they are candidates for his specific rhinoplasty techniques. He meets with patients in private to examine their anatomy, listen to their goals and expectations, and review photographs of what they envision for their results.

He will then craft a unique treatment plan, explaining his approach in depth to the patient while answering any questions. Dr. Hyman never overschedules his day, and he remains available and accessible, providing personalized attention and a superior client experience from start to finish.

What procedures can be performed in tandem with rhinoplasty?

Dr. Hyman understands the value of undergoing a single surgical session to complete all of your cosmetic goals.

This can shave time off your recovery and is also more cost-effective. He often pairs rhinoplasty with lip augmentation. In some cases, the patient will pursue a breast enhancement procedure.
