What is modern liposuction?

Liposuction is known by several names: lipoplasty, lipo, lipectomy, and liposculpture suction. By any name, liposuction is one of the most popular body contouring procedures performed in the U.S. and is typically administered as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. This means that you can leave our facility on the same day as your procedure and recover comfortably in the privacy of your own home.

Combination procedures

Liposuction can be performed as a stand-alone procedure, or as part of a:

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and does not resolve issues such as stretch marks, skin laxity, dimples, or cellulite. A candidate for liposuction is at a stable, healthy weight, but has fatty areas that won’t resolve with diet or exercise.

Liposuction benefits

Liposuction can be a life-altering experience that delivers several beneficial outcomes, including:

  • A more balanced, sculpted, attractive figure
  • A more youthful and fit body shape
  • A more attractive look when wearing swimsuits and other clothing
  • Enhanced confidence in your body image

In addition to the body-sculpting benefits of liposuction, you may find, like many who undergo the procedure, that you are inspired to live an active, healthy lifestyle to continue to enjoy your results.

These lifestyle changes can pay significant long-term dividends as you continue to stay in shape for years to come.

What areas can be addressed with lipo?

Liposuction is a remarkably versatile procedure that can effectively treat any area that has subcutaneous fat. The most common areas for liposuction include:

  • Tummy zone
  • Love handles (flanks)
  • Hips
  • Chest
  • Buttocks
  • Back fat
  • Upper arms
  • Thighs
  • Double chin fat
  • Bra fat (upper back)

Liposuction for men

Liposuction is a popular treatment for both women and men. In addition to fine-tuning masculine contours, liposuction can treat gynecomastia, a condition in which a man has excess breast tissue and wants a more sculpted chest. Men also undergo the procedure to resolve a tummy bulge, back fat or a double chin. Every treatment is customized to match the unique needs of the individual.

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

As with other plastic surgery procedures, liposuction candidates must be at least 18 years old and have realistic expectations for what the procedure can achieve. Typically, good liposuction candidates:

  • Are in good general health
  • Are at a healthy, stable weight
  • Are non-smokers or are willing to quit two weeks prior to the procedure
  • Have realistic expectations about results
  • Have fatty areas they want contoured

Of course, liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It could be the ideal treatment for healthy people who are tired of living with excess fat that no diet or exercise can resolve, or for those who inherited a propensity to store fat on the buttocks, thighs, under the chin or in other areas of the body.

Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a substance, called tumescent fluid before the fat-removal process. Tumescent fluid causes targeted fat cells to become swollen and firm, making them easier to break apart and remove with suction through a cannula (small tube).

Tumescent fluid’s special formulation includes:

  • Lidocaine: Minimizes discomfort
  • Epinephrine: Minimizes bruising and bleeding
  • Saline: Adds volume to make removing fat more effective

The lidocaine in the tumescent fluid can remain active in the body for up to 24 hours, warding off any discomfort long after the liposuction procedure has been completed. Once the effects of lidocaine have faded, you can easily manage discomfort with just over-the-counter pain relievers.

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) involves a vibrating cannula to effectively break up unwanted pockets of fat for an easier, more complete fat extraction. Not only does this effective technique help to remove a greater amount of fatty tissue, but this form of liposuction can also provide:

  • A shorter recovery period
  • Reduced postoperative discomfort
  • Less risk of excessive bleeding
  • Smaller incisions
  • Less damage to surrounding tissue (no risk of burns such as VASER or Smartlipo)

While every patient responds differently to lipo procedures, the PAL technique tends to reduce both incision and fat-removal trauma. This offers a less risky and more comfortable approach to body sculpting.

SmartLipo: Laser-assisted liposuction

Dr. Hyman is proud to offer SmartLipo.  It involves less trauma and less downtime than traditional liposuction. Unlike other types of liposuction, SmartLipo is usually performed under local anesthesia while you are awake, with a more comfortable recovery as no general anesthesia is necessary.

How does SmartLipo work?

SmartLipo utilizes advanced laser technology to safely and effectively reduce fat. It also can smooth and tighten the skin. This procedure can be performed alone to treat smaller areas of fat, such as below the chin, or in combination with other methods to remove larger areas of fat, including those in the abdomen, flanks and thighs.

Helium plasma body sculpting and skin tightening

J-Plasma is a new and advanced energy modality that combines the unique properties of helium plasma with a proprietary RF waveform. Helium plasma focuses energy for greater control of tissue response, enabling a high level of precision and virtually avoiding the risks of tissue trauma. These unique properties allow Dr. Hyman to use aggressive focused energy around delicate and sensitive structures for maximum skin tightening along with the fat removal of liposuction.

How do helium plasma body sculpting and skin tightening work?

The helium plasma is administered during the liposuction procedure under the skin by a small cannula placed through a tiny incision.

Dr. Hyman may choose to use helium plasma in areas that suffer from loose or excess skin.

He prefers to use the plasma technology combined with his power-assisted liposuction technology for the best results. This advanced liposuction treatment adds very little time and is often the ideal approach for patients who have lost a dramatic quantity of weight or are suffering from decreased skin elasticity.

The recovery for helium plasma liposuction is similar to that of other liposuction procedures, allowing for an immediate return to exercise. You will need to wear compression garments for seven to ten days. The procedure is performed at Dr. Hyman’s private, state-of-the-art surgical suite at his office at 740 Park Avenue.

Micro lipo

Micro liposuction, or micro lipo, is a very precise liposuction technique designed to remove fat from smaller, harder-to-treat areas of the body. The process utilizes very small skin punctures and a specially designed micro cannula. It creates refined contours while minimizing scarring, swelling, and recovery time. Micro lipo is performed comfortably with no need for general anesthesia. It is often used on the flanks and abdomen and can also be performed on the ankles, knees, elbows, and neck.

Does liposuction leave scars?

How long does it take to recover from liposuction?

It’s important to understand that every patient is unique and heals at a different rate. While some patients choose to take three to five days off from work to recuperate, others can go back to work in as little as 24 hours, depending on the procedure, the extent of fat removal performed, and whether your work involves vigorous physical activities. Rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous activity during your initial recovery. Dr. Hyman will discuss your circumstances and advise when it’s best to resume your regular activities.

Will the recovery be painful?

The treatment area may be numb or uncomfortable for the first few days after surgery. You may also experience some swelling or bruising. However, these symptoms are completely normal and subside quickly. Dr. Hyman will discuss your pain management options with you to ensure your recovery is comfortable.

Does liposuction leave scars?

Incisions are not made during liposuction surgery. Dr. Hyman makes small 2 mm punctures deep into the skin with a specialized instrument that does not leave visible scars. As a double-board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive liposuction experience, Dr. Hyman understands how to deliver elegant and natural-looking results you will be proud to reveal in tighter clothing. In addition to his meticulous technique and artful eye, Dr. Hyman will provide you with detailed pre and postoperative instructions to ensure your recovery is easy and uneventful.
