Liposuction Overview

Enhance Your Physique with Liposuction

If you find that no matter how dedicated you are to your self-care regimen, you are still unable to achieve a fit and toned physique, liposuction in New York City could be the ideal procedure for you. Performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua Hyman, liposuction can put the finishing touches on your fitness efforts, give you the attractive frame you desire, and restore the self-confidence you deserve.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is designed to remove stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, helping refine areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and neck. It is known by several names: lipoplasty, lipo, lipectomy, and liposculpture suction.

By any name, liposuction is one of the most popular body-contouring procedures performed in the U.S. and is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. This means you can leave our facility the same day as your procedure and recover comfortably in the privacy of your home.

What are the Benefits?

Liposuction can be a life-altering experience that delivers several benefits, including:

  • A more balanced, sculpted, attractive figure
  • Removal of stubborn fat deposits from targeted areas of the body
  • A more attractive look when wearing swimsuits and other clothing
  • Enhanced confidence in your body image

Beyond the body-contouring benefits of liposuction, many patients feel motivated to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle after their procedure. Healthy habits and a stable weight can help preserve your results for years to come.

What Areas Can Be Addressed with Liposuction?

Liposuction is a remarkably versatile procedure that can effectively treat any area that has subcutaneous fat. The most common areas for liposuction in NYC include:

  • Tummy zone
  • Love handles (flanks)
  • Hips
  • Chest
  • Buttocks
  • Back fat
  • Upper arms
  • Thighs
  • Double chin fat
  • Bra fat (upper back)

Am I a Candidate?

As with other plastic surgery procedures, liposuction candidates must be at least 18 years old and have realistic expectations for what the procedure can achieve. Typically, good liposuction candidates:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Maintain a stable, healthy weight
  • Are non-smokers or willing to stop smoking before surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve
  • Have areas of stubborn fat they would like to contour
  • Have good skin elasticity to support a smoother result

Of course, liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It could be the ideal treatment for healthy people who are tired of living with excess fat that no diet or exercise can resolve, or for those who have inherited a propensity to store fat in the buttocks, thighs, under the chin, or other areas of the body.

Advanced Liposuction Techniques for Personalized Results

Every patient has different goals when it comes to body contouring. Dr. Hyman offers a range of liposuction techniques designed to target stubborn fat, enhance definition, and achieve natural-looking results tailored to your anatomy and desired outcome.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is one of the most common liposuction techniques and uses a specialized fluid solution to prepare fat cells for removal. It is ideal for treating larger areas of unwanted fat while helping improve comfort, minimize bleeding, and support smoother results.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

Power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating cannula to gently break apart fat before removal, allowing for greater precision and efficiency. This technique is especially beneficial for larger or more fibrous areas, such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and back.

SmartLipo (Laser-Assisted Liposuction)

SmartLipo uses advanced laser technology to liquefy fat and assist with removal while stimulating skin tightening. It is often best suited for smaller treatment areas, such as the chin, arms, and other areas where patients want improved contouring with minimal downtime.

Helium Plasma Body Sculpting & Skin Tightening

Helium plasma technology combines with liposuction to provide additional skin tightening for areas with lax or loose skin. It is particularly helpful for patients who have experienced significant weight loss or have reduced skin elasticity and want a smoother, firmer contour.

Micro Lipo

Micro lipo is a precise liposuction technique that uses smaller cannulas and tiny incisions to target smaller pockets of stubborn fat. It is ideal for detailed contouring in delicate areas such as the neck, ankles, knees, elbows, and smaller areas of the abdomen or flanks.

Fat Grafting / Fat Transfer

Fat transfer combines liposuction with natural volume enhancement by removing unwanted fat from one area and strategically placing it in another. It is a great option for patients who want to refine their body contours while enhancing areas that need added fullness.

With so many liposuction options available, it can be difficult to know which technique is right for you. During your consultation, Dr. Joshua Hyman will take the time to understand your goals, evaluate your areas of concern, and recommend the approach that best fits your body and desired results.

Liposuction Recovery

Immediately After

After liposuction, it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, tightness, and mild discomfort in the treated areas. Compression garments are often recommended to help minimize swelling, support the healing tissues, and encourage smoother body contours. Light walking is encouraged soon after surgery to promote circulation and support a healthy recovery.

The First Few Weeks

During the first few weeks of recovery, swelling and bruising will gradually improve as your body continues to heal. Many patients can return to work and regular daily activities within several days to a week, depending on the areas treated and the physical demands of their routine. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided until Dr. Hyman determines it is safe to resume.

Seeing Your Final Results

While your improvements are often noticeable early in recovery, your final liposuction results will develop gradually as swelling resolves and your tissues settle. Over the following months, your body contours will become more refined and defined. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can help you enjoy your results for years to come.

Combination Procedures

Liposuction in New York City can be performed as a stand-alone procedure, or as part of a:

  • Tummy tuck: Removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal area, while liposuction improves surrounding contours.
  • Breast reduction or breast lift: Helps refine the chest and surrounding areas for a more balanced silhouette.
  • Mommy makeover: Combines multiple procedures to address changes from pregnancy, childbirth, or weight fluctuations.
  • Brazilian butt lift (BBL): Uses purified fat removed via liposuction to enhance the shape and volume of the buttocks and create a more balanced overall body contour.

Liposuction Q&A

How long does liposuction last?

Is there a weight limit for liposuction?

How is liposuction different for men?

Does liposuction leave saggy skin?

How long will I drain after liposuction?

Can multiple areas be treated in a single lipo procedure?

Are you awake during liposuction?

How long does liposuction last?

Liposuction results can be long-lasting, as the fat cells we remove don’t come back. That said, maintaining your results depends on your lifestyle. If you continue to eat well and stay active, your new shape should last for many years. I always tell patients: liposuction is a powerful tool, but it works best as part of a healthy routine.

Is there a weight limit for liposuction?

There’s no fixed weight limit, but liposuction isn’t designed for major weight loss — it’s meant for people who are already at or near a healthy, stable weight and want to target stubborn fat that won’t go away with diet and exercise. If you’re not quite there yet, I’ll guide you on the safest path forward before surgery.

How is liposuction different for men?

Liposuction for men is often focused on creating a more defined, masculine contour rather than simply removing fat. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”), chest, back, and chin. Dr. Hyman will customize your treatment plan based on your anatomy and goals.

Does liposuction leave saggy skin?

It can, but it depends on your skin’s elasticity and how much fat is removed. If your skin has good tone, it typically tightens well on its own. For patients with loose or stretched skin, I often combine liposuction with skin-tightening options or recommend a different approach to ensure smooth, natural-looking results.

How long will I drain after liposuction?

Not all liposuction procedures require drains, and I often use techniques that avoid them entirely. When they are used, it’s usually just for a few days — typically no more than a week. We’ll go over all your post-op care instructions ahead of time so you know exactly what to expect.

Can multiple areas be treated in a single lipo procedure?

Yes, and it's quite common. Treating multiple areas in one session produces a more balanced result and means a single recovery period. Dr. Hyman will determine what's safe and appropriate based on your health and the total volume being removed during your consultation.

Are you awake during liposuction?

That depends on the technique and the size of the area being treated. For smaller areas — like the chin or love handles — we can often use local anesthesia, and you’ll be awake but relaxed. For larger areas, we typically use general anesthesia. Either way, comfort and safety are top priorities.
