This procedure addresses signs of aging by tightening muscles and smoothing away wrinkles, jowls, sagging skin, and a double chin. For comprehensive facial rejuvenation, a facelift can be paired with an eyelid lift or a brow lift.

Benefits of a facelift

As you age, your skin and tissues change. A loss of elasticity is a major contributor to sagging skin, wrinkles, jowls, and deep creases. Sun damage and stress also take a toll on the delicate facial skin as time passes. A facelift can address changes caused by each of these factors. It can restore a youthful look to your face by:

  • Tightening facial muscles
  • Restoring definition in the jaw and cheeks
  • Smoothing away wrinkles and lines
  • Tightening loose, saggy skin

Is it time for a facelift?

Dr. Hyman considers multiple factors when determining if you are a good facelift candidate. Depending on your treatment goals, he may recommend an alternative surgery or a non-surgical cosmetic procedure. To be a good candidate for any type of facelift, you must meet all health and safety criteria and understand what to expect from surgery and recovery.

The criteria include:

  • You are a non-smoker or willing to completely abstain from smoking before and after surgery for a designated time.
  • You are in good overall health with no medical issues that interfere with your body’s ability to heal.

Types of facelifts

You and Dr. Hyman will discuss your goals for the procedure and the best techniques for achieving your desired results. There are many approaches to facelifts, but most likely one of the following options will be recommended:

Traditional facelift

This is the most common procedure for individuals with more extensive sagging and wrinkling. It involves an incision that starts at the temple, above the hairline. The incision continues around your ear to the lower scalp.

Limited incision facelift (mini-facelift)

This version involves incisions in front of and around the ear only. The muscles and fascia of the face are lifted as well.

What will the procedure entail?

Anesthesia

Dr. Hyman will recommend general anesthesia or sedation to keep you comfortable during your facelift, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist at our state-of-the-art, private surgical center or another medical center.

Incisions

After you are under anesthesia, Dr. Hyman will make the necessary incisions to treat your unique condition. Once the work is done, which may include tightening the underlying facial muscle structure and removing excess skin and fat, the incisions are closed with meticulous care.

Dressings

Your face will be protected with dressings, and you are free to return home to rest and recover, assisted by another adult for the first two days or more.

What is recovery like after a facelift?

Dr. Hyman will give you a specific aftercare plan. It is important to adhere to the aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth, uneventful healing process and achieve the optimal results you desire.

After surgery, you will be fitted with dressings that Dr. Hyman will remove the following day. He will remove your sutures after five to ten days. Swelling and bruising generally fade within two to four weeks. Most patients return to work or other activities in about two weeks, ready to reveal a refreshed and healthy look.

Strenuous activity and exposure to heat and sun must be avoided for several months. Your incision lines will fade within a year, and Dr. Hyman delivers customized treatments to help make scars virtually invisible.
