A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical method of rejuvenating the neck and jawline area. Age, genetics, lifestyle, gravity, and stress can all contribute to unwanted changes in the neck and jaw areas.
If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your neck, call our office at 212-517-5157 to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Joshua Hyman. Dr. Hyman is a double board-certified plastic surgeon with a discerning aesthetic eye and a passion for helping each unique patient achieve his or her treatment goals.
In your consultation, you and Dr. Hyman will discuss your expectations for the procedure, your medical history, and any other facial concerns you may have. With this information, Dr. Hyman can develop the most effective treatment plan for you.
Am I a Candidate for a Neck Lift?
You may be a candidate for a lower rhytidectomy if you want to lift and smooth the jawline and neck areas. You may have:
- Excess or loose skin
- Fat pockets
- “Turkey neck”
- Double chin
- Vertical neck bands
- Creases or wrinkles
In addition to wanting to address jawline and neck issues, you should:
- Be in good physical health.
- Be a non-smoker or willing to cease smoking prior to surgery and throughout recovery.
Neck Lift Procedure
The neck lift procedure is an outpatient surgery requiring IV sedation or general anesthesia. You and Dr. Hyman will discuss which option is best for you. There are two types of neck lift procedures:
- Traditional neck lift – An incision will start at the hairline above each of your ears and continue around your ear to your lower scalp. A third incision will be made under your chin. Dr. Hyman can then adjust, reposition, or tighten your neck muscles and tissues as needed. Excess skin will be removed, and your incisions will be closed.
- Limited incision neck lift – Incisions are made around the ear only. This procedure is intended for patients who need a less comprehensive neck lift.
You will be able to go home shortly after your procedure is complete. Due to the effects of the anesthesia, make sure to arrange for someone to drive you home.
Neck Lift Recovery
Dr. Hyman will give you aftercare instructions regarding keeping your head elevated and minimizing movement of your neck. He may place a bandage around the area to help reduce bruising and swelling. These symptoms are common, along with a feeling of tightness. Bruising will diminish in about a week, and Dr. Hyman will likely clear you to return to work within two weeks of your procedure.
Take care to protect your incision sites. Avoid situations where you could incur trauma or contact in these areas. Plan to wear clothing that you do not have to pull over your head. Protection of the incision sites includes sun protection to minimize the appearance of these lines.
Improvements in the appearance of your jawline and neck should begin to show in about thirty days, but allow several months for minor swelling and tightness to subside completely. Your incision lines will fade over the following months, and you can expect to enjoy your final results within a year of your procedure.
